About Ingrown Toenails & Matrixectomy

Ingrown toenails typically occur when the edge of a toenail grows into the skin surrounding the nail bed, often leading to pain, swelling and potential infection. Several factors contribute to their development, including improper trimming of nails (cutting them too short or rounding them), wearing tight shoes that compress the toes or injury to the toenail.

Matrixectomy is a surgical procedure used to treat recurrent or severe cases of ingrown toenails. During a matrixectomy, the portion of the nail matrix (the tissue where nail growth occurs) responsible for the ingrown nail is either removed or chemically treated to prevent regrowth. This procedure aims to permanently prevent the ingrown nail from recurring by eliminating the part of the nail that causes the problem.

Matrixectomy is considered when conservative treatments like soaking the foot in warm water, gently lifting the nail or using antibiotics fail to resolve the issue. It's a relatively effective treatment, though recovery time and post-operative care are necessary to ensure proper healing and prevent complications.
